Toolbox · Transition 1 of 4
The smallest step on the ladder, and the one where the measurement changes underneath you.
The mix, before and after
| Skill band | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Activity & mechanics | 55% | 38% |
| Deal craft | 30% | 42% |
| Pipeline management | 15% | 20% |
No new bands appear. The same three rebalance, and the one you were best at shrinks the most. That pattern repeats at every step up this ladder, which is worth noticing now rather than four roles from now.
The real change
You stop being measured on inputs and start being measured on outcomes. Nobody counts your dials any more. They count whether the deal closed. That sounds like freedom for about three weeks, and then it becomes the most uncomfortable thing about the job, because effort no longer protects you.
The part nobody says out loud
The habits that made you good at inside sales are the ones that will hold you back now.
From the seat you are in now
Everything below is available to you in an inside sales seat if you ask.
Artifacts you can build before the title
Two small things, and small is fine at this level.
One page, one deal
Pick the first deal you took from first call to signature. Write what happened, where it nearly died, and what you would do differently.
The point is not the deal. It is having one concrete story you can tell in detail, which is the entire content of an SMB AE interview.
Three lines
Written down, dated, and honestly assessed after a month. Note every time you broke it and what happened.
Most reps at this level have never articulated one. Having it in writing, with evidence of where you failed to hold it, reads as far more senior than a clean framework you invented for the interview.
The interview, and what each question is testing
One test
Sit in a silence after you have said the price, and let them speak first.
It is a small thing and it is the clearest signal that you have stopped being measured on effort.
