Concrete pre-pour checklist

A concrete pre-pour checklist confirms everything is right before the trucks arrive: forms at the right dimensions and elevations, braced and oiled; vapor barrier lapped; rebar sized, spaced and supported with proper cover; and anchor bolts, sleeves and under-slab work in place and inspected.

What gets missed most

  • Rebar sitting on the ground instead of on chairs.
  • Anchor bolts or hold-downs missing or in the wrong place.
  • Under-slab plumbing or electrical not inspected before the pour.
  • A torn or unlapped vapor barrier.

This is a field checklist, not the code. Your inspector enforces the code and local amendments your jurisdiction has adopted.

Questions trades ask

What should be checked before pouring concrete?

Forms, vapor barrier, rebar size, spacing, supports and cover, and every embed and sleeve, plus sign-off that under-slab work was inspected.

What is rebar cover?

The distance between the rebar and the concrete surface. It protects the steel from corrosion and fire. Required cover comes from the plans and code.

Who signs off before a pour?

On this checklist: the concrete contractor's QC check, the GC and the inspector.
