Electrical final inspection checklist

The electrical final, or trim-out, checks the finished work: devices and fixtures installed and working, GFCI and AFCI protection tested, polarity and grounding verified, smoke and CO alarms interconnected and tested, and the panel cover and directory finished. This checklist walks all of it and records the voltage at the panel.

What gets missed most

  • A GFCI or AFCI that doesn't trip when tested.
  • Smoke and CO alarms that aren't interconnected.
  • Reversed polarity at a receptacle.
  • A panel directory that doesn't match the final circuits.

This is a field checklist, not the code. Your inspector enforces the code and local amendments your jurisdiction has adopted.

Questions trades ask

What's the difference between electrical rough-in and final?

Rough-in is inspected before the walls are closed and looks at boxes, cable and grounding. Final is inspected when the job is finished and looks at devices, fixtures, testing and the panel.

How do I check GFCI and AFCI protection?

Use the device's test button and a plug-in tester, and confirm the power drops and resets. Mark the result on each item.

Who signs off on the electrical final?

On this checklist: the electrician's QC check, the GC and the electrical inspector.

Can I use this checklist on my phone?

Yes. It's built into myBivy for Trades, free for up to 5 people: Pass, Fail or N/A on each item, notes, photos and readings, signatures on site, and a clean PDF for the GC.
