Framing inspection checklist (pre-drywall)

A framing inspection checks the structure before insulation and drywall: studs, layout, plumb and straight walls, blocking and fire blocking, headers, hold-downs, shear wall nailing, and ceiling framing. Walk this checklist before you call for the inspection so the inspector finds nothing new.

What gets missed most

  • Missing blocking for cabinets, grab bars or TVs: cheap now, expensive later.
  • Missing fire blocking.
  • Hold-downs or straps not installed or not nailed off.
  • Shear wall nailing that doesn't match the schedule.

This is a field checklist, not the code. Your inspector enforces the code and local amendments your jurisdiction has adopted.

Questions trades ask

When is the framing inspection?

After framing, and usually after the electrical, plumbing and HVAC rough-ins, but before insulation and drywall. Your building department sets the order.

What is fire blocking?

Material installed in concealed spaces to stop fire and smoke from traveling through walls and floors. Required locations come from your adopted building code.

Why check blocking before drywall?

Blocking for cabinets, grab bars, handrails and TVs takes minutes with the walls open and hours once they're closed.
