Electrical rough-in inspection checklist

An electrical rough-in inspection checks the wiring before walls and ceilings are covered: boxes, cable and conduit, circuits, grounding and labeling. Walk this checklist yourself before the inspector does. Each item gets Pass, Fail or N/A, and the electrician, the GC and the inspector sign off at the end.

What gets missed most

  • Missing nail plates where cable runs close to the face of a stud.
  • Cable not stapled or supported near boxes.
  • Overfilled boxes, or boxes that won't sit flush with the finished wall.
  • Home runs not labeled, so nobody can match circuits to the panel schedule.

This is a field checklist, not the code. Your inspector enforces the code and local amendments your jurisdiction has adopted.

Questions trades ask

When does the electrical rough-in inspection happen?

After the wiring, boxes and panel rough are in, and before insulation and drywall cover anything. The inspector has to see the work while it's still open.

What fails an electrical rough-in inspection?

Most often the basics: missing nail plates, unsupported cable, box fill over the limit, missing grounding or bonding, and work that doesn't match the plans. Walking a checklist first catches most of them.

Is this checklist the electrical code?

No. It's a field checklist. Your inspector enforces the NEC edition and local amendments your jurisdiction has adopted, so check those for exact requirements.

Can I use this checklist on my phone?

Yes. It's built into myBivy for Trades, free for up to 5 people: Pass, Fail or N/A on each item, notes, photos and readings, signatures on site, and a clean PDF for the GC.
