Electrical service and panel inspection checklist

Use this checklist for a new service, a panel change or a subpanel. It covers the service (size, meter base, working clearance, grounding electrode and bonding) and the panel (directory, breaker sizes, neutrals and grounds, torque, openings and labels), with a space to record grounding electrode resistance.

What gets missed most

  • A panel directory that's blank or vague.
  • Neutrals and grounds tied together in a subpanel.
  • Open knockouts or missing filler plates.
  • Not enough working space in front of the panel.

This is a field checklist, not the code. Your inspector enforces the code and local amendments your jurisdiction has adopted.

Questions trades ask

What does an inspector check on a panel change?

Service size against the plans, grounding and bonding, working clearance, breaker sizes against conductor sizes, the panel directory, and that the panel is closed up and labeled. Requirements vary, so confirm with your inspector.

Why are neutrals and grounds separated in a subpanel?

Neutral and ground are bonded together at one point, the service. Panels downstream keep them on separate bars. Check your adopted code for the specifics.

Do I need to record grounding electrode resistance?

Some jurisdictions and specs ask for it. The checklist has a space for the reading in ohms so it's on record if you need it.

Can I use this checklist on my phone?
